Text Evidence
One time, I went to a soccer tournament in Columbia, Maryland. In the games my team and I played, we worked very hard and fought hardly along the way. During our games, one of our best players got a concution. Also, before the championship game, our unstopable goalie had to leave to go home early. In the championship game, it was hard with missing players and also, our backup goalie was a little nervouse and let up a few goals. We lost the game sadly. It felt like all the fighting and hardwork didn't get us to where we wanted to be or what we came there for.
An example from my life that relates to the theme.
Bridge to Terabithia and Number the Stars main theme
Although Number the Stars and Bridge to Terabithia are different books, written by unalike authors, about completely different subjects, they surprisingly have a similar theme. That similar theme, is tragedy. In both stories, the major characters had to withstand hard tragedies that then changed their lives forever. Since the tragedies are not the same, there are different approaches each author took to develop the theme for their story.
First of all, in Number the Stars, the tragedy was forced mostly upon the protagonist, as the same goes for the protagonist in Bridge to Terabithia. They were also both sad for, or about a particular person. However, the authors had to take different approaches for developing the theme for their story, but their approaches are similar in a way. The approaches Lois Lowry (Number the Stars) and Katherine Paterson (Bridge to Terabithia) are similar in a way because they both had smaller, lesser, sad events leading up to the main theme, tragedy. In Number the Stars, there was Ellen (major character’s best friend) having to leave her parents, leading up to the main tragedy of her leaving Denmark to escape the Nazis, which left Annemarie (major character) very upset and without a friend. In Bridge to Terabithia, there was Leslie (major character’s best friend) getting made fun of, laughed at, and excluded, leading up to the main tragedy of Leslie dying, leaving Jesse (major character) completely devastated. The text states “Your girl friend’s dead, and Momma thought you was dead, too.” This text example shows the devastation everyone must be going through since his family thought he was dead too. In both books, they have a similar theme, and had small, lesser sad events leading up to the main theme, tragedy.
Although Number the Stars and Bridge to Terabithia’s theme is similar, the theme is still a little different for both stories. Like, in Number the Stars, the main theme wasn’t tragedy, although it was a very important part that left the major character facing tragedy. The text stated that “…it is much easier to be brave if you don’t know everything…” this text states that Annemarie had to be brave when Ellen left. It left her with tragedy but she still was brave. Also, of course, they were both different types of tragedy. In Bridge to Terabithia, the tragedy was death. In Number the Stars, it was losing a friend. However, the authors also took different approaches for developing the theme of their stories. For example, in Number the Stars, the books events determined the outcome, so Lois Lowry wrote her book leading up to the main event. However Katherine Paterson didn’t give any hints or details leading to the main event. It was a shock that made the book more emotional for the readers. So, although they share a similar theme, the approaches are different to present the theme.
Although Number the Stars and Bridge to Terabithia share a similar theme, it doesn’t always mean that the theme, and the approaches each author took are the same. The similar theme is tragedy, and there are many similarities and differences between them, and the approaches to developing the theme.
